smoking's our only friend tonight
--"sleeping city," by intelligence dept.
this episode's named after something i find myself doing often, as well as a track from burial's first album. following the clamor of recent weeks, what you'll find will be the least noisy edition of ruin radio yet -- all breathy ambiance, cold rain, warm interiors.
there are a couple things i didn't do for this mix. i didn't record an hour of riding inside a bus and mix that beneath all the tracks, or exclude songs that take place in cars, or incorporate a lot of 2-step and garage music in keeping with the burial reference. i didn't do those things because i'm trying to stop being such a tight-ass. instead, it's got some mellow techno to dance to in your seat; a song off the magnetic fields's second album, back in the days when susan anway sang and they made the most beautiful and moving music i've ever known, before stephin merritt's cynical baritone took that away; and other eclectic dreamscapes to play while huddled in your winter layers, looking through a rain-speckled window.
i bet it's all appropriate for morning busing, too.
